Unfortunately Laos has a 1/3 of the population living below the international poverty line (less than $1.25 per day), it has the lowest annual income in the world, is ranked 138th on the Human Development Index, is the 25th most hungriest nation in the world, and has approximately 6.2 million people.
It is also a developing nation, however people, wildlife and the environment are being exploited. Bears are being used for the bear bile industry, elephants for trekking, birds are seen in cages more than they are in nature, primates have disappeared due to being a protein source for hungry families, and jungle is starting to disappear for agriculture. Young girls are sold to the sex industry and in many ways the future is bleak.
Deciding to venture into Laos for Earth FX International has been based on looking at ways to make sure the country stays sustainable. Being that it is at the start of development and knowing Laos has signed the ASEAN agreement we aim ensure the culture and history is maintained, sustainable options are explored and implemented and conservation is a high priority for the whole country.
We have been situated in Luang Prabang which is amazing – French architecture and French influences in cooking. As an excellent tourist location with the most beautiful waterfalls, the Mekong River, and amazing foods, and it’s also extremely peaceful and friendly. Here we aim to build a Conservation Center to help ensure the future of Laos.
This Conservation Center hopes to bring understanding and knowledge to the country through the Research Center through Economic, Environmental and Social Research. Education to many regarding the Earth and the different associations to human health through the Education Center, and key conservation aspects through the Wildlife Hospital, Quarantine Center and Wildlife Sanctuary. We plan to work with the Government for the greater good on all aspects, including tourism and bring a positive future to a Country still 40 years behind many Western Nations.
